FOCUS
ON:
Isabel Swiegers
As
you come over the last hill before entering Robertson, your eyes
will be drawn to the row of billowing white roses and tall palm
trees that line the right-hand side of the road. This welcoming
scene also marks the entrance to La Colline, the farm belonging
to Bruwer and Isabel Swiegers, the lady that features in the Robertson
Winery advertisement.
Isabel is the gardener
of the family, and it is easy to see why. She is colourful, voluptuous
and much prettier than in the ad. Both her home and her garden are
filled with colour. It is a busy but comfortable place with dogs
lolling about, people wandering in and out, and the constant whirr
of farm machinery in the background.
|
 |
Married
for almost 25 years, Isabel has been gardening for just as long.
“When I came here, I knew nothing about gardening. The garden
I inherited from my mother-in-law was smaller and simpler, but I
slowly started planting things; and through trial and error and
advice from friends and neighbours, I figured it out. My husband
was always on hand to give advice about fertilizer and pests, but
I had to develop the layout of the garden.” It is a peaceful
place, with broad sweeping beds and towering trees that provide
the shade so necessary during the hot, dry summers. While white
iceberg floribundas line the roadside, pink Manou Meilland make
a pretty hedge along the farm fence, while the scarlet Cocktail
climber makes a statement on the pergola near the house. The deep
yellow South Africa roses that Isabel is holding in the advertisement,
greet one at the kitchen door: “These are one of my favourite
roses, I just love the colour and they flower abundantly.”

|
|
“I
love spending time in the garden, walking around with my dogs and
watching things grow and blossom,” says this lovely lady,
who has been very busy lately, planting up the church garden with
more of her signature white roses. “I love to beautify my
surroundings, and I love to make other people happy too, that’s
what we’re like here in Robertson.”

PLATTER
GUIDE

|
Once
again Robertson Winery achieved an impressive listing in the Platter
Guide, South Africa’s definitive manual for local wines.
Our star rating over the last few years has stayed pretty much
the same, confirming our ability to produce consistent quality
year after year. All the Vineyard Selection wines were listed
in red and most of them achieved four stars, except for the No.1
Constitution Road Shiraz and the Retreat Sauvignon Blanc which
achieved four and a half stars, which is hardly surprising looking
at their impressive awards listed above. |

LOOKING
FORWARD TO 2011
Did you know that Robertson Winery will be turning 70 next year?
This winery, which
began in a small chapel in Constitution Street in 1941,
has outgrown even its own high expectations.
So we will be celebrating in true Robertson style in the coming year
and we look forward to seeing you there!
